why can't I ever come up with cool away messages like Lohmann and Ryan?? All I've got is the standard "I'm at class, blah blah blah."

Part of being Ryan or even possibly Lohmann is that when they're about to put up a crappy away message, they recognize it and stop. That's called discretion. Also, you should expand the scope of this theory to include everything you ever say.
